VO4TA: Pick Up
I’m going to go out on a limb here…
If someone teaches you that saying the words “pick up” when you make a mistake in an audition is “the thing to do”; they are just wrong.
No one says “pick up” anymore.
Why?
The words “pick up” served a purpose when recording was mechanical and magnetic.
An engineer could hear the word when rolling tape at high speed and knew where to make the edit.
Now that we have been recording digitally for over 20 years - there are still places where you are taught that somehow it’s “etiquette” to say “pick up” when a mistake is made.
It is - (I was going to say antique, but by common definition, an antique is an object 100 years old).
It is a “vintage” conceit that serves no functional purpose anymore.
Pause when you make a mistake. Go back to somewhere reasonable for the engineer to edit and then continue.
